Janice Shepard Young

Janice Shepard Young was born November 30, 1944, to the union of the late Dorothy Marino and Herman Shepard. Janice was the first born of five children, four girls and one boy. She graduated from George Washington Carver Senior High in 1964. Janice’s favorite class in high school was home economics. She was employed with the Naval Reserve Personnel Center (NRPC) for twenty-three years before she retired in 2005. Janice was baptized by the late Reverend Morris A. Edwards Jr. at Carver Desire Baptist Church. Janice was a very talented, fashionable and elegant lady. She was extremely gifted in sewing, crocheting, singing and cooking. She also enjoyed styling hair, shopping, watching movies and socializing with family and friends. Janice lived most of her life in New Orleans, La. She was a long-standing member of Carver Desire Baptist Church, serving in the choir, under the leadership of the late Reverend Morris A. Edwards Jr., and the current pastor, Reverend James R. Willis Jr. Sis Young was also a member of the Community Fellowship Missionary Auxiliary until the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina in 2005. After hurricane Katrina, she resided in Katy, TX (Houston suburb) in August 2005 through 2007. Janice then moved to Sorrento, LA. in 2007, where she joined the I Walk by Faith Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Deidre Carter in Gonzalez, LA. Janice and Willie were married on October 22, 1994, they were married for 30 years, and of this union were born two children. Leslie D. Mitchell and Sean C. Shepard. She was very much loved by her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Janice departed this life on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Janice raised two children, Leslie D. Mitchell and Sean C. Shepard. Janice leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Willie Young; daughter, Leslie D. (Carl) Mitchell and son, Sean C. Shepard; two sisters, Venessa M. Pichon and Inger A. Marigny; four granddaughters, Journeé J. Mitchell (Maurice G. Ketchens Sr.), JóVann J. Mitchell, JóNique L. Mitchell and Dr. Kelsey K. Shepard; one great grandson, Maurice G. Ketchens Jr., and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Dorothy Marino, father, Herman Shepard; sister, Brenda Shepard; brother, James B. Marigny Jr. and brother in law, Lester Pichon Jr. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a funeral service at Carver Desire Baptist Church, 3301 Montegut Street on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Interment : Providence Cemetery Arrangements by: D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue.
