Ike Matthew Vernon

When you hear of my Home going don’t worry about me. I’m just another Solider going home. On April 30, 1959 at Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence, LA. Ike Matthew Vernon was born to the union of Cornelia Denomes Vernon and the late Guy Vernon, Sr. of Roseland, Louisiana. He was united in holy matrimony to Ella McElwee and raised four sons. Ike was baptized at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Roseland, Louisiana. He graduated from Chesebrough High School in Kentwood, Louisiana. Upon graduation from high school, Ike enlisted into the United States Marine Corps, May 26, 1977. After serving in the military, Ike moved to Kenner, Louisiana. He stated working at Security Van Line in New Orleans, Louisiana for several years as a truck driver. Ike Matthew Vernon passed away on July 23, 2026, at Veteran Affairs Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. Ike is preceded in death by his father, Guy Vernon, Sr.; brother, Woodrow Vernon; sister, Leola M. Bryant. He leaves behind to cherish him, his mother Cornelia Denomes Vernon, wife Ella McElwee Vernon, four sons: Dwayne Matthew Vernon, Jamarr McElwee, Edward “Deshun” McElwee, Charles Stephen of Laplace, Louisiana; five brothers: Guy Vernon, Jr., David Vernon, Crease Vernon of Roseland, Louisiana, Leo Dexter (Lisa) Vernon of Chesapeake, Virginia, Robert Vernon, Sr., of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; five sisters: Dianner Vernon, Jacqueline (Dedric) Jackson of Cedar Hill, Texas, Malinda Stamper of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Lillie (Dawud) Levy of Palm Bay, Florida, Estelle (Kevin) Guillory of Prairieville, Louisiana; two sister in laws: Ruby Lee, Shirley Bazile; three brother in laws: Clayton McElwee, Melvin McElwee, Charles Henderson; seven grandchildren: De’Ahyri M. Vernon, Chasity Williams, Edward D. McElwee, Jr., Chelsie Stephens, Charles R. Stephens, III, A’Mari J. Clayton, and Te’ Onna M. Gibson and a host of nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Service at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave New Orleans, Louisiana 70125 on Friday, August 15, 2026 at 10:30am.
