LEGACY OF OUR BELOVED GRAND MARSHAL HONORING A LIFE THAT LIFTED, LOVED, AND LED THE WAY Eva Evelyn Wilson paraded her way into this life on January 2, 1943, in the city she would forever call home, New Orleans, Louisiana, born to the late Celeste and Ralph Dykes. And perhaps there was no better place for Eva to be born, because New Orleans did not simply shape her; she became a part of its culture. Eva was educated in the New Orleans Public School System and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, but her education did not end in a classroom. Eva had a way of majoring in everything she touched and mastering whatever she put her hands to. She was a woman of many gifts, many roles, and many stories. Throughout her life, Eva worked as a manager at Greyhound, special education assistant, bar manager, caregiver, and community servant. She served as First Lady of Tambourine and Fan and Hunter’s Field. No matter the title, one thing remained the same: Eva gave everything she had to whatever she was called to do. She took pride in her work, pride in her people, and pride in doing things the right way. To truly know Eva, you had to know that her greatest work could never be captured on a résumé. Eva Evelyn Wilson was New Orleans. She carried the spirit of the city everywhere she went. She was the woman you brought people to when you wanted them to understand what it meant to experience a real New Orleans welcome. If you wanted somebody to feel at home, you brought them by Mrs. Eva. She had a gift for making people feel like they belonged. Her home was a gathering place, her kitchen was a destination, and her presence was an experience. Her love could be found in a plate of food, a drink poured just right, a story told at the card game table, a dance in the middle of the room, or one of those famous finger sandwiches that somehow always tasted like something you couldn’t quite explain and could never forget. Eva could turn any party all the way up with her food, her drinks, her laughter, her dancing, and her unmistakable personality. And that same Eva could also decide, without warning, that the party was over. That was Eva.Real. Unapologetic. Loving. Funny. Strong. Completely herself. She had a way of telling you exactly what you needed to hear, even when you weren’t ready to hear it. Sometimes her words came with a little seasoning, as she cursed you out. You might have been offended at first, but eventually, you would laugh about it because you knew that was simply Mrs. Eva being Mrs. Eva. She loved hard. She helped freely. She welcomed everybody. And once you became hers, you were hers. Her influence extended far beyond New Orleans. Everywhere she went, she left something behind: a memory, a meal, a laugh, a lesson, a connection, or simply the feeling that for a moment, you were home. Eva was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, godmother, cousin, friend, and so much more to so many people. She was the person people called. The person people came to. The person who showed up. Her heart, her help, and her hospitality made room for countless people throughout her life. HER GREATEST LEGACY: FAMILY Eva did not play about her grandchildren, and they do not play about her. Her grandchildren were among her greatest treasures and some of the brightest lights in her world: Nikisha (Kevin) Grinstead, affectionately known as Lil Eva; Ke’Shawn Roberts; Ke’Shone Roberts; Ronald “Ronu” Wilson; Janei Dykes; Evelyn Ross; Ronell Wilson; Edwin (DeAsia) Ross II; Rondell Wilson; Skylah Wilson; and Seanna Dykes. Her love continued into another generation through her beloved great-grandchildren: Kevin Jr., Rhyland, Korbyn, Blasie’, Rhoss, Ronell Jr., Graham, Kei’Auni, Khysin, Rondell Jr., and the newest blessing, Rylan, whom she was only days away from meeting. Each one had a special place in her heart and made her world go round. And everybody knew about Grandma Eva’s crown bag filled with dimes, a little treasure that became part of the legacy and memories she created with her babies. Eva’s love for family was not simply something she said; it was something she demonstrated. She nurtured, protected, corrected, provided, celebrated, and loved her family in the way only Eva could. A LIFE SURROUNDED BY LOVE Eva was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Wilson Sr.; her parents, Ralph and Celeste Dykes; her brothers, Ralph “Zip” Dykes and Kenneth Dykes; and her son, Ronell “Mr. Woo” Wilson. She leaves her four children to cherish her extraordinary legacy: Sean Dykes; Cheryl (Keith) Roberts; Shelia (Edwin) Ross; and her baby boy, Ronald (Tontalana) Wilson Jr.; along with her beloved niece, Celeste Charlot, whom she raised as her own and who held a particularly special place in her heart. She is also survived by her sisters, Leatha (the late Dan), Carol (the late Alton), Gail (Samuel); her brother, Charles (Adrian); her brother-in-law, Gregory Gibson; her long life sisters Myrtle and Barbra Dykes; her godchildren, Karen Washington, Kikelomo Conley, and Nina Williams;her beloved friends, Patricia (Pat), Jacqueline (Jackie), Josephine (and all her personalities), Dalvoun (Delly), Delores (Dee), Leslie, Mr. Carriea, and Mr. Eddie; her eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and countless others whose lives were touched by her presence. On August 10, 2026, at approximately 4:40 p.m., Eva transitioned peacefully in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family and close friends. While our hearts struggle to accept that she is no longer physically with us, we will not allow the final chapter of her life to overshadow the magnificent story she spent 83 years writing. Eva served her purpose. She loved her people. She raised her family. She opened her home. She fed generations. She made people laugh. She told the truth. She showed up. She gave. She led. She left her mark, not only on her family, but on her community, her city, and every place fortunate enough to experience her. New Orleans will always have its music, its food, its traditions, and its unmistakable spirit. And now, it will always have Eva.Because women like Eva do not simply leave this earth. THEY LEAVE A LEGACY. They leave stories that get told over and over. They leave recipes nobody can quite recreate (them turkey wings). They leave sayings that become family traditions. They leave memories of those famous bus rides to Mexico.They leave laughter in rooms they no longer occupy. They leave lessons in the hearts of those they raised. They leave a little bit of themselves in everybody they loved. And if you ever had the privilege of sitting at Eva’s table, eating her food, laughing with her, dancing with her, being corrected by her, being loved by her, or simply being welcomed into her home, then you know: You didn’t just know Mrs. Eva. You experienced home. Today, we celebrate the life of a woman who lifted, loved, and led the way. We celebrate the mother. The grandmother. The sister. The aunt. The friend. The community leader. The caregiver. The cook. The bartender. The storyteller. The dancer. The protector. The matriarch. Our Grand Marshal. Our Mrs. Eva. And though we would give anything for one more plate, one more dance, one more laugh, one more story, or one more “come here,” accompanied by her favorite B word, we are grateful that God allowed us to have her at all. She came. She loved. She served. She led. She made a way. She made a home. She made an impact. And when her parade on earth came to an end, she left the road paved for generations to follow. THE PARADE DOESN’T END HERE. Her life continues in us. Her love lives through us. Her legacy will lead us. Rest well, Mrs. Eva. The city, the family, and all those who called you home will never forget you. You were never average. You were Eva Evelyn Wilson. And there will only ever be one you.
