Claire Flenoy Wilson

Claire Flenoy Wilson, a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, friend, life-long teacher and learner, and devout Catholic will be remembered for the joy she had for reading, creole food and her family. She was welcomed into the home of Bonita (Arceneaux) and Ernest Flenoy on August 11, 1939 in New Orleans. She departed this life peacefully on February 15, 2024 in Frisco, Texas, in her daughter’s home. Before moving to Frisco in 2021, Claire was a long-time member of St. James Catholic Church where she served the church as a dedicated member of the Guild. Her devotion to the work of the Catholic Church when she was awarded the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion. She was also a member of two Associates groups, the Congregation of St. Joseph and the Sisters of the Holy Family. A retired teacher, Claire continued her devotion to the craft by teaching Upwards at the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ People Program to her fellow seniors. When she stopped teaching, she enjoyed taking classes, in particular a Poetry class, where she contributed to the book, Fertile Repository: People Program Poets of New Orleans. Claire’s involvement in the Senior community continued in Frisco where she joined the choir at The Grove Senior Center. She looked forward to the center’s monthly movie and book club. Claire spent her entire K-12 education at St. Mary’s Academy where she graduated a year early in 1956. After graduating from Xavier University, she received a Master’s Degree in Education from Louisiana State University and a Master’s Degree Plus 30 Graduate Hours to her Louisiana Teaching Certificate. Claire retired from teaching having taught in Covington, LA and at, among other schools in New Orleans Public Schools, McDonough #35 and Carver Senior High Schools. Claire is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Grace Flenoy Harrison. Her memory will live on in the lives of her daughter, Suzanne Wilson Davis (Hillis), grandchildren, Joshua Davis, Hillary Davis, Jordan Davis and Gabrielle Davis; sister, Anita Flenoy Rogers. Her nephews, cousins, grandnieces, grandnephews sand an abundance of friends, guild members, fellow associates and grand dogs, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee will miss her immensely. Claire prayed the rosary daily and offered petitions for all who sought her prayers. Her return to New Orleans will be complete when the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. from St. James Major Catholic Church, 3736 Gentilly Blvd, New Orleans, LA. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a rosary until mass time at the church. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery #2 in New Orleans, LA. D.W.
