Beryl J. Wingate

Mrs. Beryl J. Wingate was born on March 28, 1933, in New Orleans, LA, and died peacefully in her NOLA home at the age of 91, on May 3, 2024. She was the second of seven children born to her parents, Lawrence and Selezie J. Johnson. Beryl, affectionately known as Pumpkin, Pie, Auntie B, and Grammy, was beloved in her family and community. She was a graduate of the Orleans Parish Schools, with degrees from McDonogh #35, and Southern University of Baton Rouge, LA. Beryl retired from Valena C. Jones Elementary after teaching school for 32 years. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and a member of St. David Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Selezie Johnson, stepmother, Naomi Johnson; husband, Horatio Wingate, Jr.; sisters, Barbara Olga Johnson, Patricia Johnson Kelly, Edmona Lucille Johnson Gilliano, and brothers, Robert Johnson, and Lawrence Johnson, Jr. She is survived by her children, Beryl Leslie Wingate, Horatio Edward Wingate, Frank Benjamin Wingate, and grandchildren, Christina Sherrie Wingate, and Jonathan Ray Denton, Jr, sisters Joy A. J. Washington, and Naomi Johnson Rumbolt (Derrick,) sisters in law, Jeanette Marie Reed Wingate, Sylvia Wingate Marshall, Evelyn Wingate Stanley; brothers in law, Michael Wingate, Sr.(Cynthia,) James Kelly, Sr., Derrick Rumbolt, and a host of nieces and nephews. Beryl was loved by many. We are comforted knowing she rests peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord God, and many of her family and friends. Relatives and family friends are invited to attend Beryl’s funeral on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at St. David Catholic Church – 5617 St. Claude Avenue - New Orleans, LA 70117 with Fr. Oswald P. Pierre-Jules, Jr., S.S.J. Officiant. Visitation begins at 9am, and service starts at 10:30am followed by the burial at St. Louis # 3 cemetery, and repast at St .
