Anna Mae Washington lived a life marked by deep faith, faithful service, many sacrifices, and remarkable perseverance. She was a Mother, beloved daughter, sister, servant of God, skilled surgical technician, and cherished presence to all who were privileged to know her. Her life spoke of devotion—not only in words, but in the steadfast way she worshipped, worked, endured, loved, and served until the very end. Born on October 14, 1945 to the late Mathilda Brown and Willie Martin, into a family blessed with nine siblings, Barbara, Lora Mae, Sullivan, Richard, Rogers, Juanita, Cecilia, Bo, and the late Lawrence Martin. Anna Mae learned early the value of resilience, responsibility, and love. Those bonds helped shape the woman she became: outspoken, strong-willed, determined, and unafraid to stand firmly in what she believed. She was stern on the surface, but those who truly knew her understood the warmth, tenderness, and softness she carried within, especially her only and closely held child, Jacqueline Martin. Professionally, Anna Mae served with distinction as a surgical technician, a calling that required precision, steadiness, discipline, and compassion, where skill and care meet human vulnerability, she gave of herself with excellence. Her work reflected her character: dependable, focused, and committed to helping others when care mattered most. Above all, Anna Mae was a woman of unwavering faith. Her dedication to the church was not occasional or convenient—it was a testimony. Anna was a Missionary, an Usher, Sunday School teacher, and teacher at the St. Paul School of Theology. She worshipped faithfully, served willingly, and remained devoted even as her body grew weary. Through a long and debilitating battle with cancer, she pressed forward with courage that inspired admiration and reverence. Her perseverance was not merely survival; it was a living sermon of faith, endurance, and trust in God from the time of her acceptance of Christ and baptism in 1990, Anna Mae faced her illness with the same determination that defined her life. She did not surrender her spirit to suffering. She remained outspoken, steadfast, and resolute, holding fast to her convictions and her faith. Even when the road was painful, she continued to show strength; even when the journey was difficult, she continued to worship; even when her body was tired, her devotion remained alive, weak and frail she would run, pull off her wig and lift up hands in praise and adoration to Jesus, The Christ. Anna Mae Washington leaves behind a legacy of courageous faith, devoted service and spiritual perseverance. Her life reminds us that true strength is not the absence of suffering, but the grace to keep believing, serving, and loving through it. Though her earthly journey from New Sarpy to New Orleans, Louisiana has ended, her example will continue to speak—through the lives she touched, the church she served, the family she loved, and the faith she never abandoned. Relatives and friends of the family, also employees of Charity Hospital and pastors, officers, and members of St. Paul Church of God in Christ are invited to attend Funeral Services at St. Paul Church of God in Christ, 1020 Forstall St. New Orleans, Louisiana 70117 on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 11:00am.
