Mattie Washington

February 22, 2022

Our mother, Mattie Washington, fell asleep in death on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the age of 97. She was born in Amite, La. on April 3, 1924, to Dee Dee and Lealer Carter Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dee Dee and Lealer, her brothers Booker T. Washington and Willie Washington, Sr., her sister Davida Davis, and one son, Raymond Douglas, Sr. She is survived by two sons, Larry Dillon, Sr. (Colette) and Roland Washington (Claudia), and her daughter in law, Jocelyn Cherrie Douglas of Prairieville, LA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Raymond Douglas, Jr, Rhealynda Douglas Porter (Eric), Rene’ Lamont Douglas (Quenelle), Larry Dillon, Jr. (Ckaris), Levi Anthony Dillon, Nicole Washington-Finnegan (Michael) and Rolandra Washington Griffith (Germell), 11 great- grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, and a number nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Over the past six decades, she had been an active member of a number of congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in metro New Orleans, post-Katrina Atlanta, Ga. and back home again, in metro New Orleans, helping all sorts of people to ‘come to an accurate of the truth and be saved’. She was a retired cafeteria worker/ meal planner at the old Clifton L. Ganus School, formerly located on Paris Ave. in New Orleans, and as such, provided many delicious meals at the school and catered affairs for many years. She was also well known for her hospitality to family and friends alike as she expertly and routinely prepared, stews, gumbos of all types, sauces, roasts, cakes, pastries and pies of all types. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, a Memorial Service will be held for our mother via zoom on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm (to request zoom information, please e-mail [email protected]). Burial will be private. We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to all staff and employees of Woldenburg Village, the Willowoods’ Alzheimer’s/dementia unit in Algiers, La. for their wonderful, and caring support over the years. Arrangements by D.W. Rhodes funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue. Please visit www.rhodesfuneral.com to sign the guestbook.
