Hilda S. Johnson

God sent for his angel, Hilda S. Johnson affectionately known as “Ma-Ma” to receive her wings on Monday, June 10, 2024 at her home. She was 100 years old. Hilda was born in Lafayette, LA to the late Elias and Alzina Shelvin Sr. Hilda always knew the Lord and accepted Christ at a very early age. She moved to New Orleans at the age of 18 where she joined Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She met and married Sydney Johnson. From this union, one daughter was born, Hilda Margaret Johnson. Hilda later became a member of St. Monica Catholic Church. She joined the choir, even though she couldn’t carry a tune (laughter) but she loved to sing God’s praises. There, she introduced the reciting of the Rosary and became a Eucharistic Minister where she gave Communion to members and to the “Sick and Shut-In”. Upon several life changes and health issues; Hilda went on to join Greater St. Stephen FGBC, until her health declined and was not able to attend. She leaves to cherish her legacy; 3 grandchildren; Earl (Ranata) White of Katy, TX, Dwayne (Schelita) White of Harvey, LA and Tanisha (Lamont) Ware of New Orleans, LA, several bonus grandchildren (too many to name), 7 great-grandchildren; Earl White III, Rayana LaFrance White, Roy Thomas White, Rodrick Ordogne White, Adrienne Gallo White, Kinmont Garrett and Lamont Haydel, 12 great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister; Annie Belle Shelvin and 1 brother; Frank Shelvin Sr. both of Lafayette, LA, a loving niece and nephew; Sara Martin and Joseph Martin both of Lafayette, LA and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Hilda was preceded in death by her only daughter; Hilda Margaret Miller, parents; Elias and Alzina Shelvin Sr, a Godmother and cousin; Emily Martin Figaro “Moonie”, 4 sisters; Lily Mae Martin, Annie Mae Martin, Lena Mae Williams, Mable Paul and 7 brothers; Elias Shelvin Jr “Pork Chop”, Clarence Shelvin, Joseph Shelvin, Bernard Shelvin, Elias Shelvin Jr, Clifton Shelvin and Elton Shelvin.
