Dowling Carr

Mr. Dowling Carr, affectionately known as “Unc” or “Bill”, transitioned from this life on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 82. He was born on November 22, 1941, in New Orleans to the late Willie and Emily Carr. Educated in New Orleans Public Schools, Dowling served in the United States Army for 16 years. He was Vietnam veteran and traveled to numerous countries around the world, serving as a tank driver and mess sergeant. Following his military service, Dowling was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New Orleans, until his retirement. During his tenure at the VA Hospital, he received 25 awards for outstanding service. Dowling was reared in a Christian home and was baptized by Rev. Palmer at Historic St. Peter A.M.E. Church, where he served as a member of Usher Board #3, until his health began to fail. The presence of Dowling’s smiling face and easy-going personality will be missed by all who knew and loved him, including: His wife, Imogene White Carr; daughters, Chiquita and Nikisha Carr; step-daughter, Patrice Reid (Montonio); stepson, James Bolds, Jr.; grandchildren, Xaiver Rossum and Kennedy Gibson; step-grandchildren, Logan and Landry Cannon and Khalani Reid; brothers, Melvin Carr and Wilfred Carr (Rita Renae); sisters, Lillian Mitchell (Rev. Eugene) and Lisa Dixon (Robert); sisters-in law, brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Dowling now rests with his parents, grandparents, and sisters, Willia Parker and Peggy Washington. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers and members of St. Peter A.M.E. Church and neighboring churches, employees and former employees of the Southeastern Louisiana VA Hospital (New Orleans), are invited to attend the Celebration of Life on Friday, April 19, 2024, 1:00 pm, Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave., New Orleans, LA 70125. Visitation 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm. Interment Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests monetary donations for the grandchildren’s college fund.
