Zelma Vaughn Young

Zelma Vaughn Young "Dear", a native and resident of Baton Rouge, went peacefully home, Friday, April 4, 2014 at 10:22 AM at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center Bluebonnet. She was surrounded by her loving family. She lived a full and rewarding 93 years blessing and serving others throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Charley R. Young; her parents, Roger William Vaughn, Lizette Cotton Vaughn and Louvilla Matthews Vaughn; sister, Irene Vaughn; brothers LaSalle and James Vaughn; and nephew Jonathan "Jay" Vaughn ll. She leaves to cherish her memory, two devoted daughters Charmaine Y. Huggins (Roosevelt), Killeen, Texas; Sheila Y. Butler (Benjamin), Baton Rouge, LA; five grandchildren Tracey S. Neldare (Trell), Christopher T. Sorrell (Janel), Baton Rouge, LA; Roosevelt R.F. Huggins (Mary Jo) Cypress, Texas, Reginald J. Huggins (Rhona), Killeen, Texas and Dionne B. Van Purnell, Baton Rouge, LA. She is also survived by her dedicated brother Jonathan "J.W." Vaughn (Joyce) and a devoted cousin Ora Lee "Nay" Williams, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and her New Ark Baptist Church family. She was a very faithful, dedicated and active member of New Ark Baptist Church for over 60 years until her passing. She was the Mother of the Church, member of the Deaconess Board, Co-Chair of the Trustee Board, President of the Building Fund, Chair of the Pastor's Anniversary and Church Homecoming Committees. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education at Leland College and Masters of Education and 45 plus hours from Southern University. After 34 years of teaching, she retired in 1984 from the West Feliciana Parish School System where she was one of the founders and longtime member of the Happi Llandiers Civic Club. She was also a member of the West Feliciana Parish Retired Teachers Association. Her love for children continued and she went on to volunteer at Second Chance Academy for 12 years. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of the Baton Rouge General Medical Center Bluebonnet and STAT Home Health for their caring services. Visitation at New Ark Baptist Church, 1344 Terrace St., Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 5:00PM-8:00PM and Friday, April 11, 2014 from 8:00AM until the funeral service at 10:00 AM, Pastor David Fergurson Officiating, Interment at Port Hudson National Cemetery.
