Oceanous James McCoy

Oceanous James McCoy was the last-born child to John Henry McCoy, Sr. and Noela Sarah McCoy on August 30, 1945. Oceanous was well loved by his friends and family alike and understood the high expectations of his loving parents and remained steadfast in the teachings of his Seventh-Day Adventist faith. Born in New Orleans and raised in Kenner, Louisiana. Oceanous had an exciting childhood! He and his siblings formed a family singing group called the Kenner Revelators and performed weekly on a local radio show where their father served as the announcer. He was educated in the Orleans Parish public school system and graduated from Walter L Cohen High School in 1963. After a brief period in the workforce, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Army in 1967. Stationed in Crailsheim, Baden-Wüttemberg, Germany, he fulfilled his duties with pride. Oceanous met his future wife, Beaula Richard at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church and on April 24, 1968, Beaula and Oceanous were wed in Los Angeles, California. After welcoming their first child, Secret D. McCoy, the young military family embraced life abroad in Germany. They explored and toured Europe, visiting Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and many other cherished destinations. They returned to New Orleans with treasured memories as well as a stylish new VW Beetle which they enjoyed tooling around town! In 1974, the family joyfully welcomed their second child, Kendal O. McCoy. Their love of travel and fellowship continued to flourish, with memorable journeys to camp meetings at Lone Star Camp and spirited gatherings at Youth Congresses and Alumni Weekends at Oakwood College. These experiences were spiritually enlightening adventures that shaped the family’s enduring values of faith, togetherness, and a deep appreciation for community and culture. Oceanous was a lifelong seeker of knowledge, always immersed in a new book or pursuing a fresh business venture. His career path reflected his versatility and drive, spanning roles in trucking, security, and construction. After Hurricane Katrina, he chose to retire and close one chapter of a life marked by resilience and exploration. Oceanous’s presence was a gift to all who knew him. His generous spirit, gentle affable nature, and ability to make a genuine connection with a smile left an enduring mark that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. On Monday, August 4, 2025, after a brief illness, Oceanous quietly began his slumber awaiting the return of our Savior. Oceanous leaves his loving legacy with his two children, Secret D. McCoy Aubert (Ryan) of New Orleans, Kendal O. McCoy (Denise) of Jacksonville, Fl., and two beloved grandchildren, Niko F. Mbaye and Isha E. Mbaye. He is survived by two devoted siblings, Joseph Ward McCoy (Judith) of Brentwood, TN., and Lovil and Jeaurene Howzell of Los Angeles, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends who carry his memory in their hearts. Oceanous was preceded in death by his parents, John & Noela McCoy; his siblings, John H. McCoy, Jr. and Aurita Elizabeth Booker; and Beaula “Nia” McCoy, with whom he shared the privilege of raising their children.
