Mercedes Ann Alexander Johnson

Mercedes Ann Alexander Johnson was born on January 18, 1941, in New Orleans, LA to the union of Edna Roth Alexander and Joseph Emile Alexander. On Sunday, December 13th, at the age of 79 years old, she transitioned peacefully in her sleep at the Sanctuary Hospice due to complications from cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry B. Johnson, II and her longtime companion James T. Willie, Jr. She is survived by her best friend, Charles Harris. Mercedes was also preceded in death by two of her children, son Anthony Johnson and beloved daughter Shelia Ann Johnson-Freeman. She leaves behind beautiful memories to her children, Henry B. Johnson III (Trina), Kathy L. Johnson-Mercadel, Jewel T. Alexander-Stafford (Christopher) and James Alexander (Kim); 10 grandchildren; Ingrid T. Stephen, Lauren S. Bachtel, Anthony E. Freeman, Shannon Johnson, Alexis Freeman, Amanda T. Johnson, Marissa Mercadel, Jordan C. Stafford, Kelsey Mercadel and Kamden Alexander Goodrich; six great grandchildren, Leeric, Elijah, Melody, Nyla, Brayden and Raymond. She is preceded in death by her siblings, Margaret B. Webster (Andrew), Veronica B. St. Thomas (Warren), Clara B. Eddington (Melvin), Joseph “Junior” Brown, Anthony “AJ” Brown, Edward “Poppy” Brown, Marion B. Mercadel (Joseph), Rosemary A. Doty (Harvey) and leaves behind one remaining loving sister Yvonne A. Lear (Don). She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mercedes was a loving devoted mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She devoted her professional career to working as the Assistant Director of Audubon Primary Academy (1996-2017) and office manager of J.T. Willie Funeral Home (1965-1985), both family businesses for more than 40 years combined. A social distanced celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. Rev. Mr. Rudy Rayfield, officiating. Visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery located at 4000 Norman Mayer Ave. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, all visitors are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
