McKager Alva Vandergriff

McKager (Mack) Alva Vandergriff was born on November 6, 1940, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Louisa Augustine Plicque and Tevis Bernard Vandergriff Sr. On Friday, May 6, 2022, Mack peacefully entered into eternal rest at the age of 81. He was the fifth child in the family of six. He was preceded in death by his siblings Elaine V. Draper, Wyatt V. Dejoie, Tevis B. Vandergriff Jr, and Louise Inge Vandergriff Brown. He leaves behind his only surviving brother Larry Howard Vandergriff (Marilyn), Joyce Carriere, his committed and dedicated friend of 14 years and Caregiver during the time of his illness and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and attended Lockett and Corpus Christi Elementary School and Xavier Prep High School where he graduated from in 1959. He also attended Delgado College. His ambition was to be in Building Construction with hobbies of Leather Crafts and Ceramics. He enjoyed Industrial Arts and Pencil Drawing. His Love for animals was phenomenal. He owned and took care of three cats and a dog. After graduating he was drafted in the United States Army for two years. Early on in life, after being honorably discharged from the armed services, he was very industrious. He attained several jobs before being employed at Western Electric, a subsidiary of the telephone company that manufactured and refurbished telephones, etc. He attended the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church and faithfully attended the 4 pm Mass on Saturday. His patron Saint was St John the Baptist. Mack will be sadly missed by family and friends. A special thanks to the doctors and staff of the V. A. Hospital and V. A. Hospice for the care they extended to him. Relatives and friends of the family, also priest and parishioners of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70125 at 10:00am. Visitation will begin at 9:00am. Due to Covid-19, everyone in attendance is required to wear a mask.
