Leona Carter Roche Hooper

Leona Carter Roche Hooper entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 23, 2023. She was born October 15, 1928 to the late Theodore R. Carter, Sr. and Lillian Taylor Carter. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Caroll A. Roche, Sr. and Johnny Hooper, her son, Leon T. Roche, Sr., and her siblings: Theodora C. Wilson, Irma C. Green, Olga C. Dorsey, Cleo C. Kohlman, Baby Aris, and Theodore R Carter, Jr. Mrs. Hooper is survived by her sons: Caroll A. Roche, Jr. (Mable) and Steven (Donna) Roche. Her grandchildren: Anthony (Shanell) Henry, Sean (Tameka) Roche, Ian (Sarah) Roche, Ashley Roche, Tiffany (Gene) Moll, Leon II (Sarah) Roche, Brittany (Matias) Tsigie and Steven Roche, Jr. Great-grandchildren: Anthony (Jayla) Henry, Jr., Tayveon (Kyra) Henry, Jeremiah Henry, Kellan and Theo Roche, Paige Dorion, Jordan Belser, Aubrey Moll, and Riley Tsigie. Greatgreat-grandchildren: Braylon, Kyren, Nyla, Londyn and Westyn Henry. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mrs. Hooper was one of the very first licensed African American female barbers in the state of Louisiana. She worked as a barber for many years in the New Orleans Veterans Administration Hospital and the historic Perkins Barbershop on Teche Street in Old Algiers. Mrs. Hooper joined Regular Baptist Church under the leadership of her cousin, The Most Rev. Daniel J. Powell. Leona Hooper was a stylish woman who loved fashion, jewelry and make-up. She enjoyed manicures and pedicures, styling her hair and the company of her family. Whether going to church, the mall, out to lunch, or cutting hair; she was always well groomed, made up, and dressed to the nines. A Memorial service to celebrate the life of Leona Carter Roche Hooper will be held at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 1020 Virgil Street, Gretna, LA 70053 on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 10:30am. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ricky Johnson, Pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Harvey, LA. Internment: Restlawn Park Cemetery, Avondale, LA.
