John Logan Howlette Jr.

John Logan Howlette, Jr. affectionately known as “Whistle” was born on July 6, 1948, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late John Logan Howlette and the late Fay Elizabeth Anderson Howlette. Whistle was raised in Richmond, Virginia. He was educated in the Richmond Public Schools, where he learned his real name was John, after being sent home from Norrell Elementary School kindergarten and told not to come back to school until he knew his real name. Whistle went on to play basketball for and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School with the class of 1966. Whistle attended and played basketball for Hampton Institute. Whistle enjoyed reading, traveling, basketball, swimming and storytelling. While attending Hampton Institute, he was initiated into Iota Phi Theta, a social club at the time, and now a fraternity. As Whistle entered the business world, he began being known more as John. He was excellent at Information Systems and helped many people enter the field in the 1970s. He continued his professional career from programmer to Senior Manager across multiple companies including AT&T, MCI, Worldcom, and Verizon. Whistle enjoyed his family, especially the newest edition, his granddaughter Ellis Elaine. She had his heart and kept a smile on his face this year. Whistle was first married to Audrey Atchison, and from this marriage, Christopher Howlette was lovely raised. His second marriage was to Marianne Piazza. His third marriage was to Shirley Riles, and from this marriage, Asya Howlette and John Howlette, III were lovely raised. Whistle is survived by three children, Christopher Howlette, Asya Howlette, John Howlette, III; three grandchildren, Cory Howlette, Natalie Howlette, Ellis Howlette; two brothers, E. Michael Howlette (Cynthia), and Samuel “Sandy” Howlette (Maryfrances); and a host of nieces, nephews, aunt, uncle, cousins, and friends.
