Hazel Johnson Reed

HAZEL JOHNSON REED was born November 8, 1949 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After finishing 2 years of studies at Southern University in Baton Rouge, she returned to New Orleans to complete her studies SUNO, achieving a Bachelor Arts degree with a Major in education. She is the beloved daughter of the late Henry L. Johnson and Genevieve Baham Johnson. Loving sister of Henry L. Johnson, Jr., and the late Helen Johnson Cheneau, Hilda Johnson Harrison, Victoria Johnson Trevigne, and Viola Johnson. She married the love of life, retired Judge and Honorary Consul General Morris W. Reed. To this union, three children were born Cherkaoui “Nikki” Reed, Tara M. Reed, and the late Morris W. Reed, II. She had two grandchildren, Laila H. Nugdalla and Morris W. Reed III. She graduated from Covington High School in 1967. She attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and graduated from SUNO in New Orleans 1973. She earned a B.A. degree in Education. Her first job was in the New Orleans Parish School System where she then became the First Black Consultant for Floral Roberts Cosmetic Company after which she started her own makeup line, “HAZEL J.” She was an Educator in the New Orleans Public School System, Homemaker, and school volunteer and actively involved in her children’s education at Isidore Newman and Louise S. McGehee School. HAZEL JOHNSON REED served on many Boards and Commissions—including the National Southern Christian Leadership Conference, National State Convene for Women, SCLC Christopher Homes Board, New Orleans Opera Guild, Preservation Resource Jubilee Jump Committee, the Eight O’Clocks, the Young Audience, Jack and Jill Local and State, Links, the Young Leadership Council She was a member of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Hazel owned several businesses. She served on the Boards of – the Counselor CORE, Jack and Jill. She also taught “How to Decorate.” She was a member of Beluah Land Baptist Church where she served on many committees. She later joined Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel and worked as the Public Relations director. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service honoring the life of Mrs. Hazel Ann Johnson Reed at Bethany United Methodist Church, 4533 Mendez Street, New Orleans, LA 70126 on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 am.
