Evelyn Williams Turner

Grace the world with her presence on November 21, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Deliah Williams. She was their beautiful blessing. The last of ten girls. Evelyn was born and reared on a farm in Tangipahoa Town. She worked very hard in the fields, picking beans, strawberries corn etc. Her home was a loving Christian home. Her mother was so dedicated to Jesus. She made sure they knew all about him. That is why Evelyn accepted Jesus at an early age and was baptized. She lived a Christian life and was a praying woman. She was always praying for her family and everyone else. Evelyn was a luminary a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her. She was the essence of generosity and compassion. She was guided by a profound faith expressed through hymns and scriptures. Evelyn always placed others well-being first, especially her children. She always saw the good in people. Evelyn’s commitment to her faith was evident in her lifelong service to her church community. For years, she served diligently. She was a choir member and a deaconess at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. Evelyn continued to embody the spirit of service, until she became ill. She was devastated she could no longer serve. She really loved her church family. Evelyn attended Caseylane Elementary School in Tangipahoa La. And Dillon High School in Kentwood La. There She sang in the choir and ran track. Evelyn was a caring, nurturing, loving wife and mother. She raised her children to be strong compassionate adults. Evelyn was married to the late Kerry Williams. From that union, a son, was born. She was so happy to be a mother. She moved to New Orleans and there, she married the late Ernest Singleton. From that union, six children were born. Evelyn was able to secure housing in the Ninth Ward. There she raised her children. She worked very hard. At one time, she worked two jobs. She worked at several hotels and for the president of Dillard University. Evelyn’s last marriage was with the late Alvin Turner. Evelyn’s life was a vivid expression of love and grace. She left a lasting mark on everyone she touched. She leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her family, friends and all who were blessed to know her. She is survived by her sons, Edward Ray Williams, Bernard, Lawrence (Gennett), George Singleton, her daughter Lavern Branche, and her grandchildren Mashell, Dionne, LaTonya, LaToya, Chelsea, Chasity, Alexis, Lawrence Jr, Kevin Jr, Darius, Corey, Tory, Darrell Jr and a host of great grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, a special-niece, Ann Conrad, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends. Family members who have taken their rest before her are her parents Ben and Deliah, her sisters Nercile, Augustine, Helen, Inez, Levetta, Bertha, Murdis, and Ida Mae, her son Darrell Sr., her daughter Gwendolyn and grandchildren Gerald Mason and Edward Ray Jr. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, 3320 Johnny Jackson Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 10:00am.
