Emery Louis Picou

Emery Louis Picou born September 14, 1979, departed this life on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. Dearly loved son of Yvonne Gant Picou and the late Emerson Louis Picou, Jr. Brother of Emerson Louis Picou, III. Grandson of the late Fredrica R. and Emerson L. Picou, Sr. and the late Gertrude Armstrong and Alex Gant. Nephew of Amy P. Harris, Hattie P. Proctor (Clarence), Theadora P. Clanton (Walter) and Emile Armstrong. Cousin of Clarence Proctor, Jr., Kwame Harris, Naja Clanton, Malcolm (Toni) Armstrong and Janell A. (Steven) St. Martin. Mr. Picou was a 1997 football star graduate of St. Augustine High School. In 2001 he graduated Cum Laude from Southern University with a major in Education and in 2004 he received the degree of Master of Arts. He was certified teacher in the state of Louisiana. Mr. Picou began his teaching career at Joseph Craig Elementary School where he was elected Teacher of the Year for the 2002-2003 school session. After Hurricane Katrina he moved to Baton Rouge and taught at Glasgow Middle School. There he was awarded the First-In- Math achievement award and was recognized by the State Department of Louisiana as a 2010-2011 teacher of academic growth among school standardized testing. In 2012 he returned to New Orleans and taught at Gregory Elementary School. After Gregory closed he taught at Lawrence Crocker School of Arts and Technology, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School and Smothers Academy. Mr. Picou was highly respected and valued as a professional by students and teachers alike he said “I have discovered a special coping mechanism to teach my students how to defy lower standards and to work and move onward and achieve far beyond expected academic standards.” He loved his family, his friends and cherished his students. He will be sadly missed by all. Former co-workers, members of the St. Augustine Class of 1997, employees of Covenant House, parishioners of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and other friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at Rhodes Chapel, 3933 Washington Ave. on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 9:00am.
