Edith Theresa Lopez Lazard

Edith Theresa Lopez Lazard was born April 27, 1932, to the union of the late Elliot J. Lopez, Jr. and Josephine “Josie” Levy Lopez, in New Orleans, LA. She was the eldest of her twelve siblings: Hubert, Donald, Margaret, Carolyn, June, Dolores, Beverly, JoAnn, Claudia, Claudette, and Vincent. She was married fifty-four years to the love of her life, the late Earthy “Bibbs” Lazard, Jr. It was the love within this union that created four children, Sylvia, Sharon, Errol and Sterling. Her family tree branched to six grandchildren: Shawn Brock, Erroll Lazard Jr., Kawanda (Glenn Smith) Washington, Edith Washington, Michael (Aviva) Varnado Jr., Seivauje Weber; twelve great-grandchildren: Rayven Roberts-Brock, John and Sahiem Washington, Chase and Gianna Varnado, Skylar, Ariana, Daiash, Diamond and Myron Lazard, Tyra Robinson and Aaron Dexter; five great-great grandchildren: Alicia, Aaron, Casey, Erica, and Tamara Dexter; three step-grandchildren Sherilynn Weber, Kyshawn and Jebau Washington and two step-great-granddaughters: Maya and Morgan Weber. She was a 1948 graduate of Xavier Preparatory High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earthy Lazard, Jr.; grandson, Shawn Brock; her parents, Josie and Elliot Lopez; her siblings: Hubert and Donald Lopez, Margaret Clark, her buddy - June Lopez and Claudette Barnett; her grand aunt; Albertine “Aunt Bot” Jones, aunts: Amy Boutte and Julia Breaux; cousin, Marion B. Smith and many more relatives and friends. As a young women, her first employer was Haspel sewing factory. In 1957, she was among the first black females to be employed by the US Postal Service. She entered as a mail processing clerk and rose to the ranks of General Manager of Processing & Distribution. She departed this life on Sunday, February 5, 2023, and leaves to cherish her memory to her children: Sylvia (Harold Weber) Lazard, Sharon Varnado, Erroll (Sharon) Lazard, and Sterling (Charlene Heard) Lazard; and siblings: Carolyn Washington, Dolores (John) Maxmillion, Beverly Graves, JoAnn Graves, Claudia Ally and Vincent Lopez, Sr.; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren; as well as, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Edith Theresa Lopez Lazard’s celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at St. Peter Catholic Church located at 1923 St. Phillip Street New Orleans, Louisiana 70116. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 11:00 am and Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am. Interment: St. Louis Cemetery # 2. Arrangements by D.W.
