Darrell Hollins

Darrell Earl Hollins Sr. was freed from the troubles of this world on November 20, 2016. His loving nature touched all who knew him. Born in New Orleans, LA on October 6, 1948, Darrell Hollins was the son of the late Christine Hollins and Walter Thomas Sr. He attended Hoffman Elementary School, James Dehram Middle School, and Walter L. Cohen High School. During his precious life, Darrell was employed with the LA SPCA, T&S Services, United States Postal Service, and Eustis Engineering (from which he retired). Darrell Hollins had many passions. He enjoyed playing checkers, dominos, taking care of his home and garden, listening to music, and debating political and social issues pertaining to enslaved people of color. Although he enjoyed all of the things mentioned above, his most treasured passion was for his family. Darrell’s memory will be cherished by many, but most of all by his family. Darrell Hollins Sr. leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Judy C. Hollins and his seven dear children: La’Tanya Hollins-Washington, Darrell Hollins Jr., La’keisha Hollins-Lewis, La’Shelle Hollins, La’Shanti Hollins-Newsome, La’Drecka Hollins-Arceneaux, and La’Monica Hollins-Warren and his children in-law: Sherman Washington, LaTara Davenport-Hollins, Tony Lewis, Ricky Newsome, Lemar Arceneaux, and Jacob Warren. He is the grandfather of 15 beautiful grandkids: Cordell, La’Chea, Toni, Cornell, Tyler, Nia, Jahrusalem, Nairobi, Jahremiah, Nalah, Jahnoy, Kimiko, Jahkobi, Zuri, and Negasi. Darrell was also the ultimate dad to his beloved dog “Buck”. He is survived by his siblings Tyrone Hollins, Majid Kareem, Rudolph Thomas, Brother in law’s: Jerome Celistan, Paul Kathumbria, and the late Leonard Humphrey “Bubba”, Sister in law’s: Kimberly Celistan, Sherlyn Celistan, Sandra Kathumbria and the late Margaret Celistan. Darrell was the godfather to Troylynn Armstead, Nicole Howard, Louis Robinette Jr., Benjamin Caldwell, Jonah Ledet, and Jeroid Simms. Darrell is preceded in death by his parents the late Walter Thomas Sr. and his mother Christine Hollins and his brother the late Michael Hollins. Darrell also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends to cherish his memory. He will be missed by all that knew him. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at DW Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue in New Orleans, LA at 9:00am. Visitation will begin promptly at 8:00am. On Monday, December 5, 2016 a honorary burial will take place at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 34888 Grantham College Rd., Slidell, LA 70460.
