Charmaine Butler

On August 26, 1952, Charles L. Butler, Sr. and his wife Miriam Joseph Butler welcomed a third child, a daughter they named Charmaine Agatha Agnes Butler. On April 12, 2023, Charmaine passed peacefully at Kaiser Permanente West LA Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Charmaine was a graduate of Corpus Christi Elementary School, Xavier University Preparatory‘ s last coed class. After high school graduation, she headed to Iowa where she graduated from Upper Iowa University with a degree in Art. After college graduation, Charmaine relocated to Los Angeles and lived with her sister Sheryl and nephew Edward while she attended and graduated from a special program for students who held a bachelor’s degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising to prepare them for entry level positions in the fashion industry. Upon graduation, she worked several years as a graphic fashion illustrator. She then decided to switch careers and studied to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse while working in the Maternal / Baby Ward of Santa Monica Hospital. Later, while working she obtained an Associate of Arts in nursing from Santa Monica College and worked 21 years at Santa Monica Hospital. Charmaine was a gifted visual artist who enjoyed drawing, painting, reading, listening to classical and jazz music, traveling, fashion and gourmet cooking. She was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Miriam Butler, Sr. and brother, Charles L. Butler, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory, siblings, Sheryl Butler Neely, whom she lived with for over forty years and Charlotte A. Butler; Nephews, Edward M. Neely (Zakenya Perry Neely) whom she regarded as a son and Christin Butler (Melanie); niece, Dana Butler (Melvin); and great nieces, Alexis and Madison and great nephew, Malloreigh. All friends and family of Charmaine are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Corpus Christi - Epiphany Catholic Church, 2200 St. Bernard Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana 70116. Visitation begins at 9:00 am, followed by a 10:00 am Mass. Interment following at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Norman Mayer Ave. Arrangements by D.W.
