Betty Gauthreaux Henry

Betty Gauthreaux Henry, born October 8, 1931, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at the age of 93. Betty is survived by her two adoring daughters, Kim Henry Castenell (Ronald, Sr.), and Sonia Henry Walter (Eric, Sr.); four grandchildren, Ronald Castenell, Jr. (Tesla), Kristie Castenell Phoenix (Frank), Eric Walter, Jr. (Latoya), and Dr. Lewins Walter (Bianca); five great grandchildren, Mckenzie and Erica Walter, Frank Phoenix, and Amelia and Lewins Walter; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Clara Auguston Gauthreaux and Lewins Gauthreaux. Betty graduated from McDonald 35 Senior High School, and went on to attend Dillard University. There she became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Betty graduated from Dillard University in Business Administration, returning an additional two years to certify in Elementary Education. She began her 30 year teaching career for the New Orleans Parish School Board, teaching third grade for 16 years, and first grade for 14 years. Betty’s love of teaching children continued after her retirement in 1986, tutoring in reading skills. She also tutored her three great-granddaughters, one via Facetime. Betty was raised in the Baptist faith, converting to Catholicism as an adult. She was a parishioner of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church (now a part of Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church). Betty enjoyed family celebrations and loved sharing her Biblical knowledge with others. She was always ready to listen and offer wise advice to those in need. Betty was also very creative, drawing character figures and designs for her grandchildren’s birthday parties, decorating a hall bulletin board at Corpus Christi Catholic School, and thinking of catchy prize winning themes and drawing decorations for the family’s Mardi Gras Truck Float. She was well loved and will be deeply missed by her family and all who were fortunate to know her. A Mass of Christian Burial was hosted by the family at D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.
