Sadie Mae Porter Butler

Sadie Mae Porter Butler departed this earthly life on April 1, 2021. Cousin Sadie, as she was affectionately known, lived a long and blessed life of 105 years. Born in Franklin, La. on March 16, 1916, she was the second child of Washington and Ella Hamilton Porter. As a child, Sadie attended St. John Baptist Church, in Franklin, La. where she was baptized by Rev. Samuel Bray. Later, Sadie joined New Providence Baptist Church in Centerville, La. Cousin Sadie married Joseph Butler, Sr. in 1941, and that marriage was blessed with two children, Joseph Butler, and Janet Butler. Sadie was a member of Little Zion B.C, New Home Baptist Church, and St. Peter B.C. She loved serving as an usher. Hurricane Katrina relocated Sadie to the state of Tennessee for five years, but Sadie yearned to return to New Orleans, which had been her home since she was 14 years old when she came to work. She was thrilled when the day came to return to New Orleans. In later years, Sadie found comfort and friends at the Kingsley House Senior Center where she participated in Senior Citizen activities. She was blessed to celebrate her 100-104 birthdays at the Kingsley Center. Sadie loved telling historical stories of her upbringing to all who she encountered. She also loved the Lord and wasn’t ashamed to declare Jesus as her Savior. Sadie is preceded in death by her father, Washington Porter, mother, Ella Porter and sisters, Isabelle, Elouise, and Mildred. She is also preceded in death by her husband Joseph Butler, Sr. and her baby daughter, Janet Butler. She leaves her dear son, Joseph Butler, who was always at his mother’s side, and a host of cousins and friends who loved her dearly. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a funeral service honoring the life of Ms. Sadie Mae Porter Butler on Monday, April 12, 2021 at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave., New Orleans, LA 70125 at 10:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am to 10:00 am. As mandated by the State of Louisiana due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance is limited. Everyone is required to adhere to all restrictions.
