Peggy C. Severe

Sorro Peggy C. Severe, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana departed this life on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at the age of 77. Devoted wife of the late Mr. Jerome A. Severe. Daughter of the late Joe Carter and Yvonne Rodgers Moore. Loving mother of two children: Lynnell (Richard) Scott and the late Courtney Thaddaeus Severe. Sister of Terry Moore, Daphne Hollingworth, Cynthia Moore, Gail Stein, Gaylord Mustapha, and the late Sernell Carter Moore, Ronnie Moore, Brenda Moore Easly, and Bobby Moore. Peggy is also survived by four grandchildren Romell, Sahgia, Ty, Nyeema and 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends She later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where she received her High School diploma from Walter L. Cohen Senior High School. She received an Associate Certificate at Xavier University in Child Care and Psychology. When her interest turned to beauty and Barber Culture, Peggy attended Straight Business School and went on to attend one of, if not the oldest African-American beauty culture school, Katie’s Beauty and Barbering School owned by the late Dr. Katie E. Whickman with the late Ms. Helen Savare serving as its Director. She not only went on to graduate from Katie’s but also received her Teacher Training Certificate and went on to work there as a teacher, administrative assistant and later as a Supervisor. Peggy C. Severe continued to work hard to be the best she could be by earning a B.A., M.A., and as recently as August of 2001, received her Doctoral degree in Cosmetology from the National Beauty Cultural League. She always finds time at presentations and conventions to receive as much additional training as she can, stressing that “there is always something new to learn in this field.” Organizationally, Peggy is a member of the N.B.C.I., Louisiana State Barbers Association Inc., Louisiana State Beauticians Association Inc., Vice-President of Katie’s Cosmetician Alumni, Theta Nu Sigma Sorority-Chi Chapter, and Youth for Beauty Association. As a deeply religious woman, Peggy is very active in her parish churches of St. Jude Shrine and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Churches serving as Lector, Parent Aid, substitute Bible Study teacher, and Eucharistic Minister. She also is a member of the Ladies League of St. Jude and is a member of the St. Joseph and St. Jude Altar Group. As if being owner and operator of her own shop, Peggy’s Place Beauty Shoppe, is not enough, Peggy has been busy through her public and private affiliations and participations receiving many awards such as the Sr. Louis Medallion, N.B.C.I., Appreciation Award, Katie’s Beauty and Barbering School Award, the Dr. Katie E. Whickham Award, the Helen Savare Award, the Ms. Golden Anniversary Award, the Queen of Katie’s Alumni Carnival Award, and the Mayor’s Keys to the City Award given to her by the Senate of Louisiana Legislator, the Honorable Diana Bajoie. She was the first recipient in fifty (50) years to receive the prestigious Special Award from N.B.C.I., Golden Queen of Theta Nu Sigma Sorority. She also was able to find time to serve as the year 2000 Queen of Oshun Mardi Gras Krewe. Peggy was also a part of the movie, Angel Heart, with Robert DeNiro, Mickey Rouke and Lisa Bonet. As you see from her bio, she works hard and loves the Lord and serves as in inspiration and role model to our sisters of the sorority and is a community advocate. Relatives and friends of the family, also priest, parishioners of St. Jude Shrine, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, N.B.C.I. Association, and Katie’s Beauty and Barbering School are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude Catholic Church, 411 N. Rampart St. New Orleans, LA on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am until 11:00 am. Interment: Providence Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by D.W.
