Irene C Howard

Irene (Ikey) Cowan Howard was born April 17, 1925 and departed this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on 30 September, 2022. She received her early education in Ripley, Mississippi. She was married to Major Tillman James Howard who preceded her in death in July, 2016. She was also a loving mother to Paula Howard who also preceded her in death in November, 2018. Irene can be described by her family as a gentle, loving, charismatic, soft spoken, intelligent woman who exuded confidence. Her career began at Southern University at New Orleans on September 21, 1959. She served as Counselor, Assistant Professor, Coordinator of Student Aid and then Associate Director of Student Personnel. Later she held the title of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Irene held a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Rust College, a Masters of Arts Degree from Columbia University, and further education at Northwestern University. She retired in 2005 not before becoming the first Director of the Center for Assessment. At her retirement, she was the last of the Southern University at New Orleans founding faculty and staff. Irene is preceded in Death by her parents, John and Myrtle Cowan, husband Major Tillman James Howard, daughter Paula Howard, sisters; Annie Lee Cooper, Almerth Battle, Earline Hill and brother John Cowan. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sister Daisy Cowan Guyton, and sister-in-law Barbara Cowan and a host of other nieces and nephews and friends. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave, New Orleans, LA 70125, on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM. For the health and safety of all, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, everyone in attendance is asked to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. Interment: Mt.
